# How to read a record — California permanent closures under the WARN Act

> What the record is, what the status means, and what is left out.

## How to read these records

### Which employers

Every notice in the California EDD WARN reports marked as a permanent closure, from July 2022 to October 2026, grouped by employer name. Employers whose
closures affected 50 workers or more in total are kept. Layoffs that are not closures, temporary closures, schools,
health and care providers are left out.

### A closure is not the end of the company

A notice says that a site closes. A retailer closing one store, a manufacturer moving a plant, and a company
shutting down completely all file the same notice. The record cannot tell them apart.

### What is not here

Addresses of the sites, names of contacts or any individual, and layoffs that are not closures.

**Did this company stop operating altogether?**

The internal data of a company that employed 50 people or more (Slack or Microsoft Teams archive, documentation, project histories) may still have value after it has stopped operating.

[Check whether this company’s data qualifies →](/pro.md) We are paid by the buyer if a partnership is signed, never by the company. Whether personal data in those archives can be transferred is a legal question for whoever controls them. Not affiliated with the California Employment Development Department (EDD).
